I have had many people ask me about my Ultralight equipment list. While I am a borderline Ultralightest (base weight is around 10lbs), I do often take some extra comforts, most notably my camera equipment. But that is what UL allows you to do! Take what you really want to have, without breaking your back! Let me know if you have any questions.
Backpack
ULA CDT 21.5 oz – This is a frameless design, that I absolutely love! It does not do well with loads much above 20lbs with food. On longer trips, I will sometimes have a day or two of moderate discomfort until I eat enough food to bring the weight down. They do make packs that can carry more, but they also weigh more.
Tent
Solo trips: TarpTent Trail Pro (26.1 oz) – Amazingly light tent for one person. Not the tent you want to be stuck in for a few days as it is not great to sit up in, but it works awesome as a shelter. Fully bug netted. Requires two trekking poles to use.
2-3 people in the tent. TarpTent Rainshadow 2 (46.8) – Huge tent for two people. My wife and I are both robust and 6′ tall. We have a ton of room. When our son was smaller, we fit all three of us in there, but that was tight. Like the TrailPro, it is not great for being stuck in for days, but it does a great job for the night. Requires one trekking pole for use.
Sleeping pad
Exped Synmat (15.1 oz) – 3 inch pad that packs down to about the size of a 1 liter bottle. No insulation, so only for summer use.
Big Agness Q Core SL (19 oz) – 3.5 inch pad with insulation.
Sleeping Bag
Jacks’r’better sleeping quilt – Quilts are amazing! Roomier, lighter and smaller! Sierra Stealth (17.5 oz), Sierra Sniveller (24 oz). The Stealth is a lightweight bag 35+ degree quilt. I sleep warm, so I have had it in 32- degree weather overnight without issue. The Sniveller is for my wife who sleeps cold, she is always warm in this quilt.
Stove
My favorite system changes almost monthly, but right now I would still go with the Flat Cat Gear system and Toaks pot.
Solo: Toaks 750 ml pot, Snow leopard stove and windscreen from Flat Cat Gear, with homemade pot cozy. (system weight, with lighter and spoon- 7.3)
Two people: Toaks 1600Ml pot, Bobcat stainless steel windscreen and stove from Flat Cat Gear, with homemade pot cozy. (system weight with lighter and spoon- 16.1 oz)
Water bottles:
Cheap and light Smartwater “disposable” bottles. I love the simple design and how crazy light they are!
Water filter:
Sawyer Mini w/squeeze bag.
Headlamp
Petzle UL (1 oz)
