Is this a gag gift? Nope, it is a real ultralight way to cook your meals! With a total weight of only 9 grams including the mini biners, the crotch pot is the lightest way to cook your food. Maybe a better way to say it is REHYDRATE your food. Here is a link to check it out.
Check out my youtube review as well!
I wrote about the crotch pot in a blog post a while back and was really curious about it. I decided to give it a go and took it on a five day trip to the Olympic National Park. We still brought a stove with us, but we brought less fuel. I always stop for a hot lunch on the trial. I don’t cook breakfast, just get up, pack up and go. I like hiking in the cool hours of the morning, and I’m really not that hungry in the morning anyway. After a few hours of hiking, then I am ready for a break and a meal. The concept of the crotch pot is simple. You add water to the food in your ziplock bag, you put the ziplock bag in your crotch pot, stick it in your pants and then hike for couple hours until the food is rehydrated. Easy!
After five days and 8 meals, I am not ready to leave my cook system at home. The upshot is, it works, but don’t expect hot food. The food came out luck warm at best. It was rehydrated, it was very edible, but not near as good as hot food. However, if you want the lightest system possible and want to be able to rehydrate food on the trail, then this is it! Personally, I think the food tastes better when it is hot. With my cook system weighing only 7 oz for two people, it is worth the extra weight.
If you try it out, leave a comment and let me know what you think. It is an interesting way to cook! It will certainly be a conversations starter on the trail.
Eat well!
